Biography
Ladjel Bellatreche is a Full Professor at theNational Engineering School for Mechanics and Aeronautics (ISAE-ENSMA), Poitiers, France, since September 2010.Before joining ISAE-ENSMA, he spent eight years as an Assistant and later an Associate Professor atPoitiers University, France.Since 2019, he has been a Guest Professor at theHarbin Institute of Technology (HIT), in Harbin, China. From 2012 to 2022, he led the Data and Model Engineering Team at theLaboratory of Computer Science and Automatic Control for Systems (LIAS).
Throughout his academic career, he has held various international positions, including visiting professor roles at theUniversity of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia (2015),and at the Université du Québec en Outaouais, Canada (2009).He has also been a Visiting Researcher atPurdue University, USA (2001),and at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), China (1996–1999).
His research interests lie at the intersection of innovation and impact, focusing on Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Knowledge Graphs, Query Answering Systems, Recommender Systems, and Large Language Models. His work addresses these topics with a strong emphasis on two critical non-functional properties: query performance and energy efficiency. This research spans several application domains, including aeronautics, urban computing, medicine, the film industry, environmental sustainability, and net-zero energy buildings.
He has authored and co-authored more than 360 papers presented at major international conferences and workshops, such as ACM CIKM, CAiSE, ICDE, CCGRID, ER, ICECCS, DASFAA, DaWaK, IEEE Big Data, ICA3PP, SSDBM, and WISE.He has also contributed to international journals, including IEEE TKDE, VLDB Journal, WWW Journal, Information Systems, Information Systems Frontiers, Future Generation Computer Systems, Distributed and Parallel Databases, Data and Knowledge Engineering, Soft Computing, Applied Energy, Computers in Industry, and Knowledge and Information Systems.
His dedication to the field extends to his roles as an Associate Editor of the Data & Knowledge Engineering Journal (Elsevier) and Knowledge and Information Systems Journal (Springer), as well as his positions on the Editorial Boards of several respected journals, including the Journal of Intelligent Information Systems (Springer) and Computer Science and Information Systems.
His editorial involvement extends further as he has managed 37 Special Issues for well-regarded journals, including Information Systems, Information Systems Frontiers, Distributed and Parallel Databases, Data and Knowledge Engineering, Future Generation Computer Sciences, Computing, Cluster Computing, Concurrency and Computation: Practice and Experience, and Computers in Industry.
He has played, or currently plays, significant roles in various prominent international conferences related to Data Management, Data Science, Conceptual Modeling, and Information Systems. Some of the notable conferences he has been associated with include Coopis'2026 (General Co-chair), DSAA'2026 (PC Co-chair of Application, Data and Benchmark Track), ER'2025 (General Co-chair), IEEE Big Data'2021 (Poster Co-Chair), DASFAA'2022, 2024 (Demo Co-chair, Panel Co-chair), ADBIS'15, '21, '22, '26 (General Co-chair, PC Co-chair, Special Issue Chair, Publicity Co-chair), MEDES'2021 (General Co-Chair), FQAS'2019 (Tutorial Co-chair), APWEB-WAIM'2018 (Publicity Co-Chair), IEEE Smart Data'2018 (General Co-Chair), DaWaK'17, '18 (PC Co-chair), and WISE'10 (Workshops Co-chair).Furthermore, he serves as a member of the steering committee for several international conferences, indicating his dedication and commitment to the continued growth and success of these events:
- ER conference
- ACM MEDES
- ADBIS
- DOLAP
- International Conference on Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (BDA)
- BDA (France)
- EDA (France)
He has made valuable contributions as an evaluator for funding agencies in various countries, including Algeria, France, the European Union, the Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, and the Netherlands. He is deeply committed to fostering research in Africa and Asia, exemplified by his co-supervision of numerous students. His dedication to nurturing talent and facilitating international collaborations is noteworthy.Additionally, he has secured research funding from prestigious sources, including the European Union, the French National Research Agency, and various industry companies, further underscoring his significant contributions to the research community.
He plays a multifaceted role in scientific mentoring, having supervised 36 PhD students, and providing guidance and support to research associates.Furthermore, his leadership extends to having served as the Director of the Postgraduate School of Sciences, System Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science(link) at ISAE-ENSMA from 2011 to 2022.Since September 2023, he has been the Program Director for the "Computer Science for Avionics" Master's program within the Master Aeronautics and Space at ISAE-ENSMA(link).
